Grab Bar Installation in Gulf Shores, Orange Beach, and Fort Morgan, Alabama
By James Harbin, MSW, MSN, RN | Harbin Home Outfitters
A lot of families along the coast find out they need grab bars the same way. A parent mentions they've been holding onto the towel bar to get out of the shower.
A towel bar was never built to hold a person. But in many homes, it's the only thing within reach.
Only about 1 in 5 homes in the U.S. has a grab bar, while most have a bath mat or nonskid strips. If you're looking for a grab bar installation in Gulf Shores, AL, Orange Beach, Fort Morgan, or anywhere else in Baldwin County, this post is for you.
It covers who installs grab bars for seniors, where the bars should go, how fast it happens, and what Medicare will and won't pay for.
Who installs grab bars for seniors in Gulf Shores and Orange Beach?
Harbin Home Outfitters does. We're a home accessibility company based in Fairhope, and we install grab bars for seniors and their families all over Baldwin County.
I'm a registered nurse and a social worker. I started H2O after losing my grandfather to a preventable fall.
So we assess a home the way a nurse assesses a patient. Before we drill anything, we look at how the person moves through the room, how they step out of the shower, and where they reach when they feel unsteady.
Bathroom grab bars for elderly parents: why the bathroom comes first
About 235,000 people go to the ER each year from bathroom injuries, and roughly 80% of those injuries are falls. Wet floors, hard surfaces, and tight spaces all add up.
That's why bathroom grab bars are usually the first home safety change we recommend for aging in place. They're small, they go in fast, and they give you something solid to hold.
What professional grab bar installation includes
A grab bar is only as strong as what's holding it to the wall. A falling adult can put 250 pounds or more of sudden force on whatever they grab.
That's why the install matters as much as the bar. Here's what a professional grab bar installation with us includes:
A short assessment of how the person uses the bathroom, so the bars go where they'll actually be used.
Mounting each bar into a stud, or using anchors rated for the wall when a stud isn't where the bar needs to be.
Bars rated to hold body weight, not decorative rails.
The right drill bits and hardware for tile, fiberglass, or drywall.
A clean bathroom when we leave.
A quick walkthrough so the person knows how to use each bar.
How fast can you get grab bars installed?
We typically install grab bars within 24 hours of the assessment. Once we're at the house, most installs take under an hour.
If someone is coming home from the hospital or rehab, tell us the discharge date when you call. We'll do our best to have the bars in before they get home.
Shower grab bar installation: where the bars should go
The most dangerous moment in the house is stepping out of the shower. Injuries are about four times more likely getting out of the tub or shower than getting in.
For most bathrooms, we start with three bars:
A vertical shower grab bar at the entry, for stepping in and out.
A horizontal bar on the back wall, for balance while standing or washing.
A toilet grab bar beside the toilet, for sitting down and standing back up.
As a nurse, I also look at the places people forget. That includes the path from the bed to the bathroom at night, a long hallway with nothing to hold, and the step down into the garage.
ADA grab bar installation: what it means for your home
Many people search for ADA grab bars or handicap grab bars because those are the terms they've heard. ADA is a good starting point, but private homes aren't required to meet ADA rules.
At home, we use ADA guidelines as a guide for height and placement, then fit the bars to the person. A bar at the right height on a chart doesn't help if it's out of reach for the person using it.
If you own a business, office, church, or rental property that's open to the public, the rules can be different. We do commercial ADA work too, and we'll go over what your building needs during the site visit.
Can grab bars go in tile or a fiberglass shower?
Yes. From beach condos in Orange Beach to older homes in Fairhope and Point Clear, we see tile, fiberglass, and tub surrounds of every kind. Each one needs a different approach.
Tile can crack if it's drilled with the wrong bit.
Fiberglass is thin and needs anchors made for hollow walls.
The plastic anchors that come in a hardware kit aren't made to hold a falling adult.
This is where a lot of do-it-yourself installs go wrong. The bar feels solid on the first day, then works loose over time.
Are suction cup grab bars or towel bars safe?
A towel bar is built to hold a towel. It's usually held up with small screws and wall anchors, not mounted to carry a person's weight.
A suction-cup bar off the internet can feel solid when you press on it. But suction can let go without warning, especially on textured tile or grout lines.
If you're going to trust a bar with your full weight, it needs to be mounted into the wall.
Does Medicare pay for grab bars?
Most families assume Medicare pays for grab bars. Original Medicare almost never does, because it treats them as convenience items, not medical equipment.
Some Medicare Advantage plans include a small home safety benefit that can help. Every plan is different, so call the number on your card and ask.
Veterans may qualify for the VA's HISA grant, which helps pay for medically necessary home changes. It starts with your VA doctor and the Prosthetics office at your VA medical center.
We'd rather you hear that from us up front.
Grab bar installation across Baldwin County
We install grab bars from the beach to the north end of the county. These are the areas we work in most often:
Gulf Shores, Orange Beach, and Fort Morgan, including beach condos, second homes, and rentals
Foley, Elberta, Lillian, Bon Secour, and Magnolia Springs
Robertsdale, Summerdale, Loxley, and Silverhill
Fairhope, Point Clear, Montrose, Daphne, and Spanish Fort on the Eastern Shore
Bay Minette and Stapleton in north Baldwin County
If you don't see your town listed, call us anyway. If you're in Baldwin County, we cover it.
Coastal bathrooms stay humid, so our standard is a stainless steel finish bar. It's durable and matches most bathroom fixtures.
A good bit of our work on the coast is for families who live out of town. If you're arranging this for a parent, we can handle the visit and keep you updated by phone.
As one family member put it: "I live ten hours from my family I was trying to assist and James understood our situation." - David
Something solid to hold
A grab bar is one of the smallest home safety changes you can make. It reduces fall risk at the exact spots where falls happen most.

Common questions about grab bar installation
Who installs grab bars near me in Baldwin County?
Harbin Home Outfitters installs grab bars across Baldwin County, including Gulf Shores, Orange Beach, Fort Morgan, Foley, Fairhope, and Daphne. We're a nurse-led home accessibility company based in Fairhope. Call (334) 384-4413 to set up a visit.
Do you install grab bars in Gulf Shores, Orange Beach, and Fort Morgan?
Yes. We install grab bars in homes, condos, and rentals along the coast. We typically install 1 to 2 days after the assessment, and most installs take under an hour.
How much weight does a grab bar need to hold?
A falling adult can put 250 pounds or more of sudden force on whatever they grab. A grab bar should be rated for body weight and mounted into a stud or with anchors made for that load.
How many grab bars does a bathroom need?
Most bathrooms start with three: a vertical bar at the shower or tub entry, a horizontal bar on the back wall, and one beside the toilet. The right number depends on how the person moves.
Can I install a grab bar myself?
You can, but the mounting is where most problems start. Tile cracks with the wrong bit, fiberglass needs special anchors, and kit anchors aren't made to hold a falling adult.
Do grab bars make a bathroom look like a hospital?
They don't have to. Our standard bar has a stainless steel finish that matches most bathroom fixtures, and we place each one where it works without crowding the room.
Can a grab bar go in a condo or rental?
Usually, yes. If you do not own the condo or rental, it’s a good idea to get the owner’s permission first.
